Branding Research

To kickstart the research stages of my project, I began looking at brands and what their aesthetics are. Below is a rough list of brands and the aesthetics I link them to.

Examples include Urban Outfitters with their vintage yet stylised streetwear aesthetic. H&M which is a casual brand, but is premium with its imagery and catalogue. More expensive labels like Gucci and Versace use what I would consider "adventurous" aesthetics within their brand imagery, as they are often the designer labels that will post something wild and seemingly irrelevant to their products. However, this method of branding works as it drives attention towards the designer through intrigue on social media.

Other product companies were also considered, however they became more focused to the type of product rather than a unique style that fashion companies have. For example Apple uses high quality imagery and digital renders to promote their product, the same way Microsoft or Samsung do the same. And whilst you can tell them apart with Apple's iconic white on black and often monochrome graphics, and Microsoft's clean, productive approach, they don't have that edge that fashion brands do in displaying products with their own unique aesthetic that sets them aside from the other labels. However, that is theoretically a given since they are two completely different product categories.

That being said it was interesting to see the extent to which different product brands promoted themselves visually. IKEA stands out in the furnishings world as a responsible yet modern brand compared to Furniture Village, for example. Tesla stands out at the forefront of the electrical vehicle push, however is still relatively new in the market compared to companies like Ford or Mercedes.

In addition to the notes I wrote, as shown in the image above, I also posted a question to my Instagram story, asking anyone who saw it if they knew of any brands. This didn't pick up much attention, but it was an attempt at gathering ideas from external sources.
