Following from the storyboard created a few days back, the next task was to go and shoot the idea. Whilst others spent the initial time playing with camera techniques, I was ready to film my piece.
Sequence 1
The first scene that I shot on campus was a shot where the subject was sat static as the camera dolly’s in on their face before zooming ‘into’ their head. This shot was set up in the studio against a green screen sheet in case I later wanted to add a backdrop in post. The subject (myself) was to be sat on a stool in the centre of the scene, making for a symmetrical shot. The camera would also be set up dead-centre and follow a straight path towards the subject. This should reduce the amount of movement in the shot. Whilst I could have used equipment such as a gimble or tripod dolly, these were not available at the time and I needed to get this shot completed. Thus I set up my phone to shoot at 60fps to get the best silky smooth footage possible in low-light conditions. Any shake or issues found in the footage could then be adjusted in post using stabilisation tools in Premier Pro.
(the clip cannot be displayed due to file size, however above is a screenshot showing the scene set-up)
This scene is set up putting the subject in the spotlight to represent the pressure they are under. The bright light above them produces a harsh atmosphere over their head to show the intensity of this. The harsh shadows that contrast across the subject’s face also show this uneasy atmosphere. The subject is alone and isolated against a solid backdrop, sat alone in an unknown location which, at first glance, appears to seem the a normal room.
Whilst this scene didn't look how I intended it to, with far harsher lighting than I had initially hoped for, and a set that didn't quite match the candid and busy set I had had in mind, I was able to work with this and make the footage look rough uneasy, which represents the mood the concept is trying to convey.
Sequence 2
The second sequence of footage to be shot was to be filmed outside of the studio in an outdoor environment. This environment had to be as empty as possible and seem almost post-apocalyptic (i.e empty streets, roads and no pedestrians) Furthermore the shot was to be filmed at night to literally represent a darkness.
The subject from the sequence above was to be used again but this time the shot would be taken from behind. The subject would be hooded and wearing black to merge in with the darkness, illuminated only by the street lighting.
(again, due to file size I am unable to upload the raw footage shot for this sequence, instead screenshots from the clip are shown below)
