The first task of the project was to complete a set of research pieces about a selected art piece. Selecting a piece by French artist Rene Magritte titled “Not To Be Reproduced”, I discovered a large variety of Magritte’s work was based on surrealist concepts, many of which played with subtly altered versions of reality. It was this theme that led me to create the initial ideas for what my media project could be about.
I chose to combine the surrealist theme of altered reality with modern lifestyles, involving the world of online and social media where the quantity of unique creator realities grows endlessly, making it harder to decipher between what is real and what is an altered reality. It was the idea that the creator of the media has the power to create whatever version or perspective of reality they want, be that a subtle edit in a photo to make themselves look better or a major transformation of a product to lead people to believe that it is the best for them. This concept is one that spans across varieties of media, from social to advertising, enticing the audience and viewers into a false reality.
